I’ve yet to try a whoopie pie;
their tastiness I can’t deny
OR confirm for you quite yet –
but I’d bet on “yum” if I made a bet.

Chime in with your review if you’ve had them! Bonus points for a review of the new-fangled “gourmet” whoopies I’ve been seeing round these parts lately. Are they as tasty as they look?

  3. Audrey Mango says:

Oh, I can confirm! My college (in Lancaster County, PA) had a bakery that made the chocolate and vanilla whoopie pies year-round, but between the beginning of October and Christmas break they also made pumpkin whoopie pies filled with cream cheese icing. The pumpkin cake was moist with a little sticky layer on the outside that stuck to the plastic wrap, and the icing squished out the sides. The bakers steadfastly refused to make them in the spring semester despite our plaintive requests (I think to make us appreciate them more). Those two and a half months were glorious.

  4. Danielle says:

Not much for the filling (but I’m not in any confectionery), but I do love the outside cookie bits.

  5. Am I alone in thinking that whoopie pies may be the American macaron? I’ve never had either, but they sure look similar.

  6. Lauren says:

Mmm.. they are tasty! I haven’t had one in a long time though. Those look SO good. I might have to get to bakin! :)

  7. Natasha says:

I’ve never had one :( and totally wish I had. they look *so* good!

  8. Amy I. says:

I made pumpkin whoopie pies with cream cheese frosting last week! It was my first time having them and yes, they taste even better than they look. I’m going to try red velvet next!

  9. Myra says:

    OHHHH, so hungry….

Whoopie Pies are a native Maine treat (where I’m from). I highly recommend them from Isamax (called “Wicked Whoopies”), especially in the different flavors. I also recommend making them yourself, they are fun and soooo delicious~|!

I live in Amish Country, and I make frequent trips to this little farm stand that sells Pumpkin Whoopie pies. They are sticky moist piece of heaven. When I was going to school in Philadelphia, I would drive 2 hours just to get my hands on a dozen (or three) and share the addiction with friends.

  12. Linda G. says:

WHOOPIE PIES: Amazing, when done correctly! They can be overly sweet and sort of icky when they’re made by people who don’t know what they’re doing, but when they are done properly, OH EM GEE.

For some reason, the best whoopie pies in the whole wide world can be found in Amish Country. They’re about the only reason in the world to go to Lancaster, PA. (Unless, of course, you are in the market for an Amish-made shed as well as an incendiary whoopie pie experience.)

Pumpkin whoopie pies are my favorites.

  13. Kristen says:

Oh, whoopie pies. I grew up in Amish Country as well, on top of which, I worked in a bakery as a part time middle school/high school/college summer job for many years. I’ve dipped and filled hundreds, no, thousands of whoopie pies. Chocolate, chocolate with peanut butter, red velvet, pumpkin (with cream cheese), lemon, banana (with cream cheese)…the list could go on and on. I got sick of looking at them some days, but I have to tell you, they are delicious. The pumpkin ones are great, but the banana with cream cheese might be my fav. De.li.cious.

  14. Amber says:

They’re awesome, I grew up with them. I make a delectable pumpkin whoopie pie w/ cream cheese filling. Make sure whatever kind you get, the frosting is made with marshmallow Fluff; the kind you get at most grocery stores just has their regular old frosting in them and it is NOT the genuine article.

  15. Mackenzie says:

As Lancaster County, Pa native, I can assure you they are delicious! I’ve had them since I was old enough to eat. My grandparents were as Pennsylvania dutch as you can get (excluding the amish of course), and my g-ma would make the best whoopie pies! The best are chocolate with peanut butter filling. yum!

  16. Christian says:

You guys are adorable. That is all.

  17. Tracey says:

I was adopted into a PA Dutch family in York county, and also lived for a few years in Lancaster county. Whoopie pies are a delicacy and need not any of that low fat crap. The chocolate and white are good, but the pumpkin cream cheese or RED VELVET with cream cheese are amazing (and my fav’s) The farmers markets will sometimes process the ‘high end’ with the fruit flavors, but the traditional ones are the Amish ones that are cake flavored. I wish we could send you some authentic ones!

  18. Stephanie says:

I made some vegan whoopies recently: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scanadensis/4101499300/

They were from the My Sweet Vegan cookbook. They were great!

  19. Hannah says:

Living in the New England area since birth, I’ve eaten a few whoopie pies in my time. They’re pretty good, but in my opinion they’re kind of like a glorified devil dog, even when you get them hand made.

  20. Hannah says:

Oh! Though I do remember my Latin teacher made us pumpkin whoopie pies. If you’re going to have a whoopie pie, try to have one of those.
