The most expensive cupcake in the world

cute-food-expensive-cupcakephoto by imagesofvegas.com

Holy crap. I just had to share this with you:

“What makes a cupcake worth $750? How about 100 year-old Louis XIII de Remy Martin Cognac, Palmira Single Estate Chocolate from the rare Porcelain Crillo bean, Tahita Gold Vanilla Caviar – the most labor-intensive agricultural crop in the world, and edible gold flakes. Baked and assembled by the executive pastry chef of The Palazzo, Chef Long Nguyen, this royal treat will keep you coming back until you’re broke.”

This is taking sweet & salty to a whole new level! I guess you can’t exactly eat the whole thing at once, can you.

  2. Irit says:

Sounds terrible revolting, if you ask me. I’ll take a regular, sweet, run-of-the-mill cupcake any day. :-)

  3. Glix says:

No gooey frosting? What’s the point? :)

  4. Nonny says:

I don’t think that the Caviar that they are referring to is actual fish-egg caviar. I am completely unable to find any information regarding the aforementioned caviar, but I was able to find a reference to “Tahitian Gold” which is a name given to a certain vanilla bean. So it would seem that the Tahitian Gold Vanilla Caviar is instead some strange form of vanilla, or vanilla flavored something.

  5. epicute says:

You’re totally right! I just googled “vanilla caviar” and got this:

Each vanilla bean is actually a bean pod, full of small, black beans that appear as little dots and are often referred to as vanilla “caviar”.

    Nice work, detective!

  6. Nonny says:

    Aha! I found more information!

    Vanilla Caviar

Vanilla is the world’s most labor-intensive agricultural crop, which is why it’s so expensive. It takes up to three years after the vines are planted before the first flowers appear. Tahitian Gold vanilla is laboriously hand-pollinated. The fruits, which resemble big green beans, must remain on the vine for nine months to completely develop their signature aroma before they are hand-harvested and the lengthy process of curing, sweating and drying begins. Tahitian Gold Tahitian Vanilla Caviar is obtained by manually splitting the beans and carefully extracting the seeds.

soo, speaking of bacon cupcakes, i just went to one of my other favorite sites and found this:

i hope that shows up as a link or something clickable

french toast cupcake, maple frosting, with bacon on top.

  8. Pie Perfection says:

i’ll stick with cake mix and frosting, thanks.

    pretty though.

  9. ChocolateCheesecake says:

    Holy. Crap.
That thing is beautiful. I would nto be able to eat it.

  10. Tadjio says:

They have $5k pizza and things too, and I wouldn’t eat any of them even if I had the cash. If you want to consider food items as increasing in tastiness as the price increases, you realize that things can only go so far. A really amazing to-die-for pizza MIGHT be worth $100 on some special occasion — anything more than that and you’re basically just looking for expensive junk to throw on there to justify an inflated price.

Supposedly Cleopatra used to drink pearls dissolved in vinegar — not because it tasted nice, mind you, but simply because it was expensive. I can understand fine and exotic foods, but when you make something edible out of ridiculously expensive ingredients just so you can SAY you ate a slice of cake worth $1000…it seems kind of silly. You might as well be eating your money straight out of the wallet at that point.

    Pretty picture, though.

  11. Emily says:

Wow! That’s a crazy looking cupcake! It sounds like it would be good, but I don’t know. So many other things I could do with that kind of money.

Speaking of expensive desserts, have you heard of the Golden Opulence Sundae from the Serendipity 3 restaurant in NYC? (My city :) The pricetag is $1000 and it’s got all sorts of crazy things in it, including gourmet chocolate like that cupcake. I saw someone order it once when I was there. It was a crazy event! Supposedly you have to order it a month in advance.

Here’s an article about it with a picture:

  12. Applecore says:

“keep you coming back until you’re broke” – I think that would be after just one!

  13. Genevieve says:

Ridiculous and ridiculously expensive food has historically been more about flaunting your wealth than the food actually being “better” than any bog-standard fare. There are some great stories about mediaeval lords giving banquets with pheasants that still appeared to be alive and desserts covered in gold leaf, and even making sure the table cloths were made of the finest, and most expensive, linen- all just to show off. (They even specifically chose to have all-male cooking staff, just because they commanded higher wages!) It proves that you have so much money, you CAN literally eat it.

Personally I can think of more practical things to spend $750 on- you can get a whole lot of regular cupcakes for that!

  14. Genevieve says:

Now THAT I would shell out for! Yum!

  15. Bibi says:

Tadjio, I agree with you 100%. Couldn`t say it any better. And the picture really is beautiful.

  16. Donna G says:

One mere nibble would make me broke!

  17. Tadjio says:

Oh, I know that conspicuous consumption is an ages-old human habit :) I guess it doesn’t hurt anyone (probably creates a lot of business in fact) so I’m really not criticizing — just saying, I would probably draw the line at about $20 for a reeeeally nice cupcake.

I’ve read about those medieval banquets you’re describing 8D Fascinating stuff, really! (I think the article about ‘entremets’ on Wikipedia has some info.)

  18. :) says:

That’d be fun to eat one someday just to say I have :D

  19. Irena says:

Yum, too gorgeous to eat though!

  20. Lulu says:

It’s beautiful, but…I think it’s a waste to eat such ridiculously expensive food.
I’m not too sure if that cupcake would be very tasy either…

  21. Niha says:

    I’m with Tadjio.

  22. Orae says:

Pshhh. I saw a box of gold covered chocolates in harrods in London, and they cost over £10,000.
Tip: always ask the price of something in there BEFORE offering to buy it. ‘_’

  23. D says:

Yeah, but how does it taste?
