Dream Bento Contest!

cute food photos - where the wild things are bento

By Anna the Red

Everyone loves a good bento box. Seeing intricate scenes come to life in a frame of food is an awesome artform, and we’d argue that no one does it better than our friend Anna the Red.

And so we’re launching our first ever Dream Bento Contest! Leave a comment detailing the bento of your wildest dreams. Anna the Red will hand-select one bento box to make, and the lucky entrant will see it come to life!

Guidelines:

  • No realistic food art of a person (i.e. celebrities, political figures, etc.)
  • No vulgar themes (i.e. genitals, bodily functions, etc.)
  • Anna the Red will pick the winner from people who leave blog comments here between June 16, 2010, 12:00 pm EST to June 23, 2010, 11:59 pm EST. She will create the bento and we will share the winning entry on Epicute and My Food Looks Funny on July 1, 2010.

Would love to see a Winnie-the-Pooh bento. With Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, a honey pot, Pooh’s Thoughtful Spot, and honey bees!

Or, Alice In Wonderland with Alice, the Caterpillar, Big mushrooms, Cheshire Cat, and the flowers that talk/sing.

  2. aLiTa says:

Oooo, I would love to see a bento of “the snorks” (snorkels? depends on where you live) or maybe a fraggle one :D

  3. jme says:

+1 on the snorks idea :)

I would love a Moomin family bento, if you know what that is :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moomin

  5. Amybee says:

I would love to see one of the characters from Toy Story. Perhaps overplayed since it’s coming out this weekend, but who doesn’t love Woody, Buzz, and the gang?

  6. Katie says:

Can’t this one win automatically! Ok maybe not, but is there any chance for a Wizard of Oz one with the gang skipping down the Yellow Brick Road and being followed by the adults (the witches and the Wizard that is) and maybe throw in the flying monkeys! PLEEEEEEEEASE!

  7. I am going to have to go with a staple, I’d love to see a pirate fighting a ninja!

  8. THB says:

How about an LOLcat bento – complete with caption and cheezburger. :-)

  9. Laura says:

Something fun and bright: Katie from Horton Hears A Who, with ponies, rainbows and butterflies from her adorable quote “In my world everyone is a pony, and they all eat rainbows, and poop butterflies!”

  10. Robotic says:

    Fraggle Rock!

  11. Pattycake says:

Ooohhh… I would love to see a Lilo and Stich themed bento!

  12. Stef says:

Lord of the Rings bento! That would be epic.

Although, I also second Winnie the Pooh!

  13. Jessa says:

I think my ideal bento box would be a happy fat dragon laying on it’s back, maybe with a little kitten cuddling up to it’s belly? x3 Thats how I see my fav anyway…

  14. Kelsey says:

I’m not sure how you could come up with something blue, but… Smurfs?

  15. Amy says:

The Little Prince…I read that in French Class (loooong time ago). Or how about famous art replicas? Oooo Claude Monet water lilies – now THAT would be awesome :)

  16. epicutian anonymous says:

I think a bento of happy cat of lolrus would make my day!

  17. Emily says:

What a wonderful idea for the blog! Thanks for giving us this opportunity! :)

What about a world-cup themed bento box? Obviously, it wouldn’t have the likenesses of any of the players, but maybe generic soccer players on a field or something? I’d love to see a mini soccer ball in a bento box *-*

    one can dream!!!

  18. Katty says:

Ooooh, maybe an Osmosis Jones bento! With Ozzy and Drix chasing Thrax through the mouth. That’d be cool.
Or maybe a Disney themed bento with the major villians! Like Scar, Gantu, Jafar and, maybe the Evil Queen from Snow White. Maybe all sitting around a table, plotting?
I dunno, I have a great love of villians :P

  19. heres one... says:

ok, Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein, Werewolf, all sitting down at the last supper scene by da vinci

  20. DeviSmiles says:

Is this like that movie “Where the Wild Things are”?? because if it is i hated the movie but that looks sooo cool :)

  21. audrey says:

The Lorax in bento form = spectacular.

  22. A scene like a Monet Japanese garden painting.

  23. I would love to see a beauty bento box – all makeup (lipstick, eyeshadow, foundation, etc.). It could be in the form of individual items or a makeup palette. I’m just beauty obsessed and love makeup :)

  24. kaybee says:

    A bunny. Possibly holding a chainsaw? :D

  25. Kaitlyn says:

I would LOVE to see an entire Hayao Miyazaki bento! Maybe a JiJi riding on Totoro with ponyo in the water. Oh my gosh, so cute!!!

  26. Cheeseburger says:

I think an undersea themed bento would be cute, possibly with an appearence by one of our favorite Disney characters (i.e. someone from Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid?). I can just imagine the seaweed and the teensy bubbles and little bashful starfish tucked into the corners…

  27. Zombie Julie says:

The most awesome bento would be of a zombie riding upon a shark equipped with a lightsaber. Oh, how much joy that would bring into my life.

I realise that bento is a Japanese thing, but seeing them branch out from that is actually more awesome, and to me, more creative.

  28. Wowzerx'? says:

    -Harry Potter
    -The Hardees/Carls Jr Star
    -Spongebob
    -TRIFORCE.

  29. WorldToast says:

I’d like to see a Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland bento.

  30. MissHighFashion says:

Oh please do The Giving Tree…or Courderoy…

  31. hmph says:

I would LOVE to see a “Bloom County” Bento! The Voyages of the Starchair Enterpoop ( I like panel 1, 2, 3, or 5: http://blog.cruachan.ca/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/enterpoop.jpg ) or the cover art from “Loose Tails” ( http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/18/46/6793828fd7a0f3448bb52110.L._SL500_AA300_.jpg ) Or a nice picture of Opus, Milo, Bill the Cat (ACK!), Steve, etc. in the dandelion patch. YOur choice…

  32. hmph says:

my comment went to moderation… I suspect because it has links in it… so here it is (and I put a space in the http of the links so it won’t show as a link (I hope)) in case the original doesn’t make it…
I would LOVE to see a “Bloom County” Bento! 33. Nuriburi says:

I think Alice falling into the rabbit hole from Alice in Wonderland would be my dream scene!

  34. candytuff says:

Howles Moving Castle…the actual castle YAY

  35. Sedona says:

2 words – Lady Gaga. Think about it a second. The bright colorful outfits, outlandish hats – anything crystal sugarcoated would be as sparkly as her! We all know you eat with your eyes first and the most healthy stuff is always brightly colored… Gaga = good for you!! Thank you for your time :)

  36. sararah says:

I would love to see one with DINOS on it. They are my favorite. Especially the STEGOSAURUS!!1!1!!!1

Also, I second the TOTORO bento. He is probably my favorite Hayao Miyazaki character.

  37. Kelly says:

Astro Boy? A Toy Story scene in honor of TS3 coming out? Shrek?

  38. Lady.Khrystal says:

    I have two cute ideas…

One would be an Alice in Wonderland Tea Party bento with tea cups and Alice, the Mad Matter, or the doormouse. Old Disney version, of course. Not the new Johnny Depp version.

    Or…

A steampunk bento with gears and a clock and things like that.

  39. wvvampire says:

I would love to see a bento of The Very Hungry Catapillar. It would be soooo super cute!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Very_Hungry_Caterpillar

  40. Derek says:

You should make Karin the cat or the turtle from the original Dragon Ball!

  41. Capt_Video says:

My husband LOVES Iron Man… Iron Man bento would be soooo cool!!!

  42. Jane Lane says:

Let’s see some of the cast of “Daria”. The entire series did just come out on DVD. Black nori can be used for her eye glasses, Jane and/or Trent’s hair. Crinkle cut carrots might do Quinn’s hair nicely, and there’d be good use of irony since Fashion Club members constantly eat carrot sticks. Use red bell pepper for Jane’s jacket, and green bell pepper for Daria’s. Yes. This is something I’d love to see….

  43. Desiree says:

I would LOVE to see a Rainbow Brite or Stewie Griffin (Family Guy) bento!!

  44. Aku says:

I would love a Alice in Wonderland bento, with Chesshire the Cat and Alice (as a basic) and some decoration elements as a hat, a tea pot, some poker cards… don’t know but I think it’d be lovely

  45. Elizabeth says:

I’d love to see a Miffy And Friends bento (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miffy). I’ve seen lots of bento boxes with Miffy and friends on the lid, but hardly any with Miffy *in* them. Maybe the bento could be not just Miffy, but Miffy with her puppy and her best friend or other characters. All the characters are made up of fairly simple shapes, so I think they’d make a great kyaraben :)

  46. Leukelunch says:

I would LOVE (!) to see a Wallace and Gromit bento being made by Anna!!!

  47. Molly says:

I would love love love to see a “the little prince” bento with him and the little fox, maybe.
If not maybe something Osamu Tezuka, like Kimba or astro boy!

  48. TheGeekCooks says:

I would adore a Scott Pilgrim bento (based on either the comics or the hot off the E3 previews video game).

AnnaTheRed is a wonderful blogger and outstanding bento artist, not to mention an inspiration to me as a fellow female of the geek/gamer persuasion.

  49. freakanzoy says:

I’d love to see a Final Fantasy VII bento, perhaps with Cloud and Sephiroth…

    Pyramid Head <3

  52. Lexy says:

I would die if I saw a doctor who themed bento. What’s more nommable than a dalek?!

  53. n3kk1d says:

Aww I was going to say Howl’s Moving Castle too, but I was thinking more of Howl, Sophie and Calcifer in the bento =)

  54. Darby Brooks says:

I would love a Katamari bento. Preferably with the Prince (or Kinoko) rolling up the King!

  55. Irene says:

I would like to see Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley <3
With maybe Hogwarts on the background? Or casting a spell.

  56. Adu says:

I would love an arctic themed bento! (icebears, penguins, … :p)

  57. Jules says:

    I love zombies!
    and moomins too!

    now i know!

    a HEAVY RAIN bento!!

  59. jenn says:

I would love to see Tori Amos playing the piano…

  60. heidrance says:

I emphatically agree with the Doctor Who bento!!!

Sidebar: is this like the Rule 34-35 of Epicute? “If it exists, there is a bento of it. If no bento exists, one will be created.”

  61. Haz says:

    Request: Dexter’s Laboratory

  62. Thanh says:

I would to see a Thundercats bento. You know, that 80′s cartoon with all the strange characters!

  63. Dee says:

I’d love to see a One Piece bento! (With lots of Tony Tony Chopper!)

Maybe it would be Chopper and he would have his hands full of all that cartoon food they eat all the time… you know the meat that’s on a bone but just falls off deliciously with some devil’s fruit on the side.

Or maybe anyone else on the crew. Watching that show (and how they’re constantly eating) always makes me hungry, so I vote for a Straw Hat Pirate Bento!

  64. Emily says:

A PAC-MAN bento would just make my heart go pitter-patter :)

  65. Reid's Mama says:

Ooooh, a Yo Gabba Gabba bento would be spectacular. We are all “Yo Yo” crazed in this house, as my son calls it.

  66. Julia says:

I’m such a fan of musicals, so what about a Phantom of the Opera bento? I think it would look really cute :)

Or Spirited Away! That would also look really awesome as a bento!!!

  67. Katie says:

    Do a Pokemon bento :D
    Or a Nintendo one?
A classic Japanese thing basically :D

  68. dilysia says:

I would like to seeh a kingdomhearts bento with a cute little shadow holding a heart ^,^
    or a luckystar bento :)

  69. Melissa says:

I think she should do an alice in wonderland bento box!

  70. Falling MB says:

How about an old freighter that breaks into two in the ocean. The name of the ship should be visible in big letters and say Media Blasters!

  71. koneko says:

I propose a porco rosso bento, with a red plane and a pig pilot!

  72. ChocolateCheesecake says:

I’d like to see a Starry Starry Night bento (Van Gogh) or (I’m such a dork) perhaps a Doctor Who/TARDIS bento? Because that would make me squeal like a silly little fangirl.

I’d LOVE to see a Katamari bento with the King of All Cosmos!

Oh oh oh! I totally second the Doctor Who! I love Doctor Who!
    *Squeals*
Like, the TARDIS on a strange planet or something!

  76. Miyazaki says:

Oh, it’s really hard to pick just one… Let’s see, I think I’ll suggest the following:

    - You could make a Gyakuten Saiban bento, with the “Objection!” and all (I don’t know how hard that would turn out to be, but…)
    - Or maybe a pokemon one, I love chikorita so much :3
    - What about Mimi Wo Sumaseba? I just love this movie SOO much… But it could be also Neko no Ongaeshi…

  77. AnnieMo says:

Ponyo! Have you ever done a Ponyo bento?

  78. Kyou says:

    A Professor Layton bento? ^^
    One of my favourite games~

  79. I definitely second the Doctor Who bento. Either that, or one themed REPO! The Genetic Opera! Link to the second in my name, for those who don’t know it.

  80. Elizabeth says:

I would like a paintable bento, you know, with a white rice canvas on an easel made of…vegetable strips? With a miniature brush made of…rice noodles? and edible paint, like sweet & sour, soy sauce, jelly, etc. And for desert….. Picture frames made of chocolate!!

I’m not sure if I’d eat it, I’d have so much fun playing with it. No, I’d eat it. Yum.

  81. Rachelle says:

a bento box similar to Leda’s (sailor jupiter) in the following picture:

    http://www.airandangels.com/bentobox/images/makotrib01.png

  82. Leukelunch says:

Or what about a Starcraft II bento? My husband has been waiting for this game for years….and is so excited about the final release this summer!!!

  83. Aine says:

    ANIMAL! DRUM DRUM DRUM!
Seriously, Animal and the Swedish Chef, or any other Muppet…
But Animal is mandatory! (and colourful)

  84. Alyandra says:

I’d suggest the little green dinosaur from the “Puzzle Bobble” game. I’d love to see what you would make of it.

  85. Mallie Alyen says:

I would love a bento of Moomin and Pikachu sitting on a cloud of rice. The sky is filled with a gorgeous orangechicken sunset~ >w<

  86. Cheeseburger says:

And if you don’t like the oceanic idea, you could do dinosuars with volcanos and palm trees and other superepic prehistoric stuff! RAWR!

  87. Zaneeba says:

Fraggle Rock and Doctor Who would be my favourites. Not in one bento, though… ;)
A Fraggle Rock Bento with Red and Boomer and maybe some Doozers?
How about Star Wars? An R2D2-bento would be kinda cute, too.
Ah, so many ides, so little bento boxes…

  88. Auryon says:

I would have to say a Vivi bento (character from Final Fantasy IX) battling a Tonberry (also another character from the Final Fantasy series). Other video game-themed ideas would be LittleBigPlanet… a sackboy bento would be awesome!

  89. Madison says:

    A CORALINE THEMED BENTO. PLEASE.

  90. Bridget says:

There’s a fantastic webcomic called Sinfest. ( http://www.sinfest.net ) I’d love to see a Sinfest themed bento. Howl’s Moving Castle has already been mentioned, but that’s a wonderful idea, as well.

  91. Bailey says:

    My bento ideas….

    1. the wizard of oz

    2. the little mermaid

Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snowmonster (a.k.a. “Bumble”) from Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

  93. Megan says:

I’d like to see a “Charlie the Unicorn” bento box. You can find his videos on YouTube. The videos themselves are… well, a little risqué, but the characters are mostly cute. I’d like to see the bento with Charlie and his two nameless unicorn friends, The Magical Leopluradon (from Charlie the Unicorn1), and Starfish (CtU3). The background would have to be the “Japanese music game” background from CtU2, because it’s gorgeous.

And even if you don’t make the box, check out the videos. They’re not for everyone. I think they’re hilarious, though.

    Thanks for what you do!

  94. Steph says:

I have to agree with the Dr Who Suggestion. I would explode with happiness.

  95. Mittens says:

An Australia bento! With a gum-tree with a koala in it, and a kangaroo made of cheddar or something hopping past, and an Aboriginal-art style sun, all in the Australian outback. :)

  96. Sara says:

I would like to see a bento of a green brontasaurus eating a little cupcake with a cherry on top! Now THAT would be squee!

  97. aiceesie says:

Lucky Star bento motion seconded! That would be adorable! It could be this picture, cuz it’s so funny looking.
    http://media.photobucket.com/image/lucky%20star/akothegreat/Lucky%2520Star/LuckyStar.png
Or maybe the cover of the first manga!
    http://www.pinkkryptonite.com/images/pinkkryptonite/LuckyStar/1LuckyStar.jpg

  98. Mad Mary Madeline says:

I’d like to see a friendly kiddy dragon. Since it’s a kid some of its teeth are missing, it’s training on its flames, and it looks a bit shy and at the same time endearingly fierce-ish.
My second favorite design would be a Discworld scene, like the Luggage, since I absolutely love all things Discworldian.

  99. Annie says:

  107. Erin says:

I would love to see a Swedish Chef bento!

Fluffy and Uranus from “Duckman”. They should be screaming in terror — cuz they are going to be eaten after all.

  109. Abby says:

I honestly love most of the Pixar movies, so it would be great if you did a mish-mosh of different Pixar movie characters.

Some movies to look in to:
    *Toy Story
    *Up
    *Finding Nemo
    *Despicable Me
    etc.
