Jeepers Creepers

Halloween Cupcake, originally uploaded by kellbakes.

Hope you are all having a fabulous & slightly (or very, if you’re into that sort of thing!) spooky Halloween! Feel free to share your costume, the coolest candy loot you’ve ever scored, or the creepiest decoration at the party you’re attending. I’ll be dressed as CSI Miami’s Horatio Caine, complete with orange wig and sunglasses. I know, I know. You wish you’d thought of it first.

Ilenia sent in these amazing pumpkin meringues earlier this week. I didn’t even know you could make meringues that look like this. I would gladly trade a few pieces of leftover office candy for one of those trays. I mean, that’s totally an even trade, right? It’s almost like Ilenia would be winning. Um. [chomps]

For the last few weeks, I’ve been completely obsessed with the Fuji Instax Mini camera. It’s adorable (it comes in pink and blue!) and it takes instant photos which look kind of like Polaroid’s skinny younger brother:

He's just not that into you

He’s Cute, originally uploaded by EJK41.

Eek! Sorry for the late post; I got totally caught up with things far less cute than this little set-up.

Let’s hear about your creative pumpkin carving ideas! My friend carved a pumpkin in the likeness of her pug last weekend, I once decorated mine with a lowercase eth, and this is super adorable, too!

Trick or Trix

Trix Cereal Spider Cookies, originally uploaded by Bakerella.

I figure these are cute enough to woo over even the most arachnophobic food critics, amirite? I mean, they look more like little baby octopuses than spiders, anyway — and who doesn’t love an octopus? Nobody. In fact, I’m having not one but two octopuses over tonight for a little banquet, heh-heh.

And for those of you not totally sold on the awesomeness of octopuses, check out this amazing excerpt from one of the coolest articles I’ve ever read:

The Octopus, like many other predaceous animals who seek their prey by night, habitually returns to skulk in the same retreat in the daytime. This practice enabled the resident Octopus of the Brighton Aquaa’ium to enjoy, for many weeks, the run of all the neighbouring tanks by night undetected, for, like the celebrated robber Peace, he was always to be found at home in the morning. But the rate at which he thinned the young Lump-fishes in an adjoining tank led to give suspicion, and after too hearty a meal one evening he imprudently stayed out all night, and was caught red-handed, gorged to distention, next morning, in the Lump-fishes’ abode.

Nice work, octopus.

Ghost with the Most

As it turns out, most people do not consider Halloween to be a “cute food” holiday. Do you have any idea how many hours I’ve just spent slaving away at my monitor, trying to find Halloween-themed desserts that won’t scare your pants off? How many hours of my life have now been filled with gummy brains, cookies slathered in terrifying red grocery store icing, and kind-of-cute-but-may-give-me-nightmares spider cupcakes? Lots of hours. Trick or treat bags stuffed to the brim with hours. Approximately .25 hours.

PS: You can find the recipe for these coffee flavoured cookies here.

You know, maybe the reason I’m not super into Halloween isn’t because I’m a slacker who can’t get a decent costume together — maybe it’s because I’m kind of a megawuss. That’s right, guys: I am totally scared of ghosts. Zombies are ok; I mean, they’re kind of like really, really uncute puppies. Witches I think I could take in an arm-wrestling match. And I sorta fancied vampires before they got all sexy, back when they still had intense widow’s peaks and wore funny cloaks. Ghosts, though… eek.

This one is a darling, though. He’s definitely coming at you… for a hug.

Don't be a Hallo-weenie

Ok, ok. Some of us (ie me) probably can’t help it. Our October decor will be store-bought pumpkins at best, and cobwebs au naturale at worst. But for those of you blessed with the culinary equivalent of green thumbs (cocoa thumbs? curry thumbs?), Chic Cookie Kits has an easy-peasy tutorial for turning your cupcake’s buttercream wasteland into an autumn paradise. You’re welcome!

I was looking at a lot of candy shots today (see here, here, and here for more!) and thinking about Halloween — it’s coming up, you know. (If all the pumpkins and witches’ hats appearing in storefronts didn’t clue you in.)

Halloween is actually my least favourite holiday as an adult. There’s no day off, and I’m no good at costume planning. Well, costume planning I can do. I’ve had a few swell ideas in recent years, like a ventriloquist’s dummy or an anachronistic time traveler (wearing pieces from multiple centuries!) or even Horatio Cane from CSI Miami. On Halloween day, though, I realize I haven’t bought or made anything, so I throw on a black party dress and go as… I’m not sure, really. Someone in a black party dress.

What about you? What’s your best (or worst!) Halloween effort?
